James A. Moran has spent four decades in advertising. Recently recognized as a Top Professional in the industry by Marquis Who’s Who, Moran maintains the same enthusiasm for sales and marketing as he had when he studied those fields at Louisiana State University (LSU). In 1984, he became the founding member of the Moran Group. His success with the ad agency is due in part to his unique ability to connect with people.
A Friendship Sparks a Bold Venture
Upon graduation in 1981, Moran landed his first job selling paper products to hospitals and other facilities for a large Atlanta-based Fortune 500 company. However, he didn’t enjoy what he sold. “The product wasn’t as important to the customer, so it didn’t excite me as much,” he says. Dissatisfied with the work, he returned home and entered the oil field sales industry. He worked extensively in Texas and Oklahoma until his career took an unexpected turn. “The oil field business crashed, and I got laid off,” he says. With limited options, he returned to LSU and attended graduate school, focusing on coursework in marketing.
“Merrill Lynch was about to hire me,” Moran says. “I was going through all the training, and I was about to start with them the following week.” However, a fateful encounter with a college friend on the set of a Buick commercial film shoot would once again alter his career path.
The father of Moran’s friend owned a New Orleans-based advertising agency. “I’ve always been a golfer,” he says. “And they needed a golfer for the commercial.” During the shoot, his college buddy got into an argument with his dad, quit the agency, and asked Moran, “Do you really want to be a stockbroker?” Ten minutes later, they agreed to start their own advertising agency.
A Growing Portfolio of Major Accounts
The Moran Group got its start handling TV, radio, and print ads for car dealerships, as well as media buying. Over the years, the agency expanded into the healthcare, grocery, QSR, and retail industries. The roster now includes about 200 automotive accounts, in addition to hospitals and multi-location brands, across multiple states.
In 2007, Moran invested heavily in digital products and services before many smaller agencies embraced them. Digital work now accounts for roughly 75 percent of The Moran Group’s business. He also supported the development of in-house platforms that track customer identity and increase the return on investment (ROI) for clients.
Key Moments That Set the Agency Apart
Moran’s agency has achieved several milestones. One highlight is winning a local Chevrolet association pitch that included a 40-member female singing group performing live Chevy jingles. With this creative approach, they won the contract and earned front-page recognition in Ad Age.
Another defining moment came when Ochsner Health selected the hometown agency among competitors. The Moran Group was one of the only firms south of the Mason-Dixon Line being considered. The partnership continues to this day, supporting Ochsner Health’s digital marketing coverage across a multi-state region.
Moran’s most notable achievement may be managing the Gulf States Toyota distributorship’s regional advertising for close to two decades. The partnership spans Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi and involves a substantial budget.
A Family Approach to Business
The Moran Group now has almost 90 employees, with plans to expand further. Family is woven into its structure: 10 relatives, including Moran’s son, nieces, nephews, and brothers-in-law, work within the company. His father joined the agency at 58 after a long corporate career focused on talent and contract negotiations. Through his dad’s influence, the business has developed a people-first culture and a strong employee retention record.
As he looks several years ahead, Moran’s focus remains steady. He wants to keep improving the agency’s services and compete nationally by recruiting top talent. He attributes his success to competitiveness, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to continuous learning and improvement. The result is a four-decade career defined by adaptability, long-term relationships and an unmatched commitment to his craft.
