When Suchitra Kamath founded Business Karma in 2022, she was not just starting another consulting service. Instead, she sought to address the instability of running a business without a proven model. Before launching her firm, she owned a printing franchise that thrived during the COVID-19 pandemic, while many independent shops struggled to stay open. This experience sparked the idea of guiding others into the franchise sector.
Insights from a Wall Street Career
Kamath’s work is grounded in years of professional experience in investment banking, entrepreneurship and consulting. After earning a degree in engineering from IIT Delhi, she pursued a master’s degree in library and information science at Rutgers University, New Jersey. Later, she built a career on Wall Street. While there, she took on program portfolio management and regulatory roles at Tier 1 investment banks on Wall Street in New York City.
Kamath’s time in finance demanded precision, stamina and adaptability. When regulatory shifts and family responsibilities converged, she sought a career that gave her not only financial stability but also flexibility with time and schedule. It’s a decision that led her to business ownership and ultimately to consulting.
A Different View of Franchise Ownership
Misconceptions have surrounded franchise ownership. Many people assume they need prior industry experience, but Kamath disputes that belief. Instead, she stresses that franchises are intended for individuals who lack expertise in the said industry. “Basically, if you don’t have any experience, that’s better because you come in as a blank slate and you’re more adaptable to learning and executing the franchise model,” she says.
Kamath notes that adaptability and a willingness to follow established systems are the keys to success for a franchise business. In her consulting work, she explains that franchising is less about inventing from scratch and more about applying proven methods. “You just need to take that template and run with it,” she says. For many, this creates a viable path into business ownership while reducing risk.
Civic Roles with Social Impact
Kamath’s professional work is only part of her influence. She is also active with civic and community contributions. She was appointed as a commissioner by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to the New Jersey-India Commission, as well as the New Jersey First Committee within the Department of Labor. She is also appointed to the Middlesex Board of Social Services, assisting with economically disadvantaged populations.
Within the nonprofit space, she serves as a director of The World Food Movement NJ Inc., which provides free, hot fresh meals to college students and the needy, and she is the president of the Middlesex County chapter of the Women’s Political Caucus of New Jersey, as well as a founding member and the executive director of Inspiring South Asian American Women (ISAAW).
Kamath has also been recognized with several honors, including the Rising Star Entrepreneurial Award from the New Jersey Immigrant Entrepreneur Awards in 2018, as well as recognition by Senator Menendez in 2020 for her notable community contributions as an immigrant. Her contributions show her dedication to the community, imparting value education to the children and empowering women.
The Impact of Family Values
Raised by parents who emphasized academic achievement and spiritual development, Kamath credits much of her success to their influence. Her mother stressed the value of academic education while her father exemplified humility and simplicity. Both her parents laid the foundation at her childhood home for building spiritual values and character.
Kamath now passes those lessons along to others. For example, she teaches value education to children through the India Heritage Foundation. Her professional work with clients also shows this balance of intellect and empathy. As a consultant, she focuses on building one-on-one connections and envisioning what the client truly desires and what would best fit their needs.
Global Vision for Business Karma
As president of her consulting firm, Kamath helps individuals and investors match their ambitions and resources with franchise opportunities that fit their lifestyle and needs. In the next five to 10 years, she envisions Business Karma expanding beyond North America. She also aims to help aspiring entrepreneurs worldwide discover the advantages of franchising.
