Patrick Slade Sartain has always had an interest in making a difference. As the chief operations manager of Lifeguard Ambulance Service LLC in Lauderdale County, Alabama, he makes advancements in emergency medical services. Securing the role at just 23, Sartain is one of the youngest professionals to achieve this position. Under his leadership, life-saving care continues to reach those in need.
A Twist of Fate Charters a Career Move
Sartain’s professional journey started with personal brushes with mortality. As a child, he suffered a severe anaphylactic reaction from bee and wasp stings. Later, he witnessed a tragic accident near his childhood home involving victims he knew. These experiences cemented his respect for emergency responders.
In 2018, Sartain joined the U.S. Army as a combat medic, honing his skills in high-pressure environments while serving for four years in El Paso, Texas. Military life enhanced his technical skills, leadership abilities, discipline, and resilience.
While in the service, Sartain pursued higher education, earning an Associate of Science in health science and later a Bachelor of Science in Fire and Emergency Management from Purdue Global. Despite the difficulty of balancing military duties with academic goals, he was determined to set himself apart.
A Leader Who Delivers Results
Since taking on the role of chief operations manager at Lifeguard Ambulance Service in 2022, Sartain has transformed emergency response in Lauderdale County. When he first joined, staffing was low, and the system lacked efficiency.
Within six months, the number of responders in the area tripled, and in 2024, Lauderdale County, Alabama, had over 60 percent advance-level responders. Under Sartain’s guidance, the team is now on the verge of launching Alabama’s first community paramedic pilot program. This initiative will expand access to care for underserved populations.
Sartain has also recently obtained a critical care service license for the Lifeguard Ambulance Service in Lauderdale County, making his operation one of less than 20 critical care-licensed ground services in the state of Alabama. This initiative will expand the level of care to the residents of Lauderdale County by allowing responders to recognize and treat strokes, heart attacks, traumatic paralysis, and internal hemorrhage in the field prior to arrival to an emergency department.
Sartain cites his intense motivation as a source of his success. The influence of his parents instilled in him a relentless drive, strong determination and unyielding perseverance.
Time to Answer Another Calling
While emergency medical service (EMS) is his professional calling, Sartain’s heart is rooted in agriculture. In 2023, he founded Legacy Farms in Rogersville, Alabama, as a tribute to his late grandfather’s farming traditions. The farm also serves as a means of creating sustainable agriculture opportunities for the future.
Sartain’s vision extends to politics. In the future, he aims to influence policies that benefit emergency services and rural development. Until then, he remains active in civic service as a member of the Elgin Volunteer Fire Department and Rogersville Volunteer Fire Department.
Leadership, Family, and Future Endeavors
As he prepares for his wedding in June 2025, Sartain has made financial independence part of his long-term plan. As a forward thinker, he intends to avoid reliance on traditional retirement plans and aims to generate $1.5 million through strategic investments. This approach is not just about personal success but also about creating opportunities that uplift others.
Through it all, Sartain remains focused on leaving every situation better than he found it. Whether responding to emergencies, mentoring future leaders, or building a sustainable community, his mission is one of service, growth, and lasting impact.
