A respected professional, MaryAnne Sabido Werner is recognized for her expertise in higher education, accounting, and taxation. Her career is distinguished by significant achievements and contributions to her field, including service as an adjunct professor at Pasadena City College since 2023, where she shares her extensive knowledge with students. Concurrently, she has served as director of MCNK Consulting Agency in Sierra Madre, California, since 2017.

About MaryAnne Sabido Werner

Werner earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Southern California and was recognized with her inclusion on the dean’s list. Following this accomplishment, she obtained a Master of Business Taxation in 1993. Additionally, she earned certification as a public accountant, which has been instrumental to her career.

Early on in her professional journey, Werner worked at BDO Seidman in Los Angeles, serving as a senior associate from 1996 to 1997. Her next position was at PwC in Los Angeles, where she held various roles, including director. During her time with the company, she became the first Filipino woman to achieve partnership status in the international tax division from 2011 to 2015.

Werner’s work in education includes her service as an adjunct faculty member at the Leventhal School of Accounting at the University of Southern California, where she taught a master’s program in business. She also served as a faculty adviser for the USC Asian American Business Association.

In addition to her extensive career in education, Werner’s role in the MCNK consulting practice has involved hiring former students as independent consultants, a move that has been particularly notable in light of recent tax legislation and the COVID period. This initiative has provided them with the opportunity to apply the concepts they learned in the classroom to real situations.

Inspiring Passion Through Teaching

Werner continues to focus on teaching, hoping to inspire individuals to take what they have worked hard for and pivot to something they are passionate about. With many individuals shifting careers and roles, she hopes to mentor others, encouraging them not to minimize the importance of the knowledge and networks they already have. While some individuals struggle to identify the capital they have developed over the years, she aims to help students recognize their value and capital, including professional relationships maintained through platforms like LinkedIn.

In addition, Werner emphasizes to her students the importance of treasuring and maintaining their day-to-day interactions both inside and outside the classroom. She teaches them not only her curriculum but also life lessons, encouraging them to value the personal connections they build throughout their lives.

Making an Impact in Civic Pursuits

Beyond her role in higher education and consulting, Werner has been actively involved with the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (ABVM) Pasadena Catholic Church. She also volunteers at St. Francis High School and formerly participated in Alverno High School. Her ongoing work with these institutions highlights her dedication to her community and her continued support of educational and civic causes.

Werner has been recognized for her leadership within industry-related organizations, including the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and as chair of the national executive board for the International Society of Filipinos in Finance and Accounting from 2013 to 2016. She credits her success to maintaining a positive mindset and focusing on what brings her joy. She believes that taking the time to read and learn throughout one’s professional journey is also key to success.

Outside her professional and civic involvement, Werner enjoys traveling. Looking to the future, she aims to assist others with grief and tax planning, as well as potentially pursue a law degree to represent tax foundations before legislative bodies.

While Werner acknowledges that the future is full of possibilities, one path she is particularly excited about is presenting good tax policy to the U.S. Congress with the Tax Foundation team, working alongside experts like Daniel Bunn, William McBride, and others.
