Mental healthcare often falls short of a patient’s needs. When a diagnosis misses the mark, treatments fall off, or a patient proves resistant to early counseling, these complications can become a perpetuating cycle. Exta Oppong Tweneboa, PMHNP, has seen it all firsthand. Some of the patients who need help the most struggle to find it or end up in a pattern of in-and-out treatment that makes long-term stability difficult to imagine.
For more than 15 years, Tweneboa has watched patients and their families struggle with a fragmented mental healthcare system. As a psychiatric nurse practitioner at the Hospital for Behavioral Medicine and Advanced Psych Services, she provides care for patients experiencing schizophrenia, psychosis, and substance use disorders. Out of a desire to do more, she founded Kobbex Behavioral Services and Lyne Tele Services, where she helps expand access to alternative treatments. She wants more people to get the care they need, whether inside or beyond a hospital.
A Career Built on Education, Leadership, and Compassion
Tweneboa’s expertise is grounded in extensive education and diverse clinical experience. In 2022, she earned a master’s degree in psychiatric-mental health nursing from Walden University. Prior to her graduate education, she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Framingham State University and an associate degree in nursing from Quinsigamond Community College. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Nursing Practice to further expand her knowledge and impact in the field.
Tweneboa has served in roles beyond psychiatric care, including rehabilitation and case management. She was the clinical director at Summit Academy Schools, spent over a decade at Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, and worked in Medicaid authorizations and patient transitions at the University of Massachusetts and Tufts Health Plan. She attributes her success to her faith, her family’s support, and her deep commitment to patient care.
Growing Beyond Traditional Psychiatry
Tweneboa’s work extends beyond the hospital setting, where she manages acute psychiatric cases and searches for long-term strategies to prevent patients from returning to crisis care. Her focus on stabilizing individuals experiencing schizophrenia and psychosis is matched by her dedication to guiding them toward sustainable treatment pathways. She also provides specialized psychiatric support for elderly patients dealing with depression and cognitive decline, ensuring they receive care tailored to their evolving needs.
Recognizing the limitations of traditional psychiatric care, Tweneboa is working to expand access to innovative treatments. Her outpatient clinic, Kobbex Behavioral Services, is designed to help more patients leap from hospital care to long-term wellness. She is interested in branding her own business as she establishes her outpatient clinic.
Tweneboa also runs Lyne Tele Services, which brings mental health support directly to patients through online consultations and alternative treatment options. These forms of treatment include weight loss treatment and ketamine therapy for treatment-resistant depression. By broadening the scope of available care, she hopes to reach individuals who might otherwise struggle to find effective solutions within conventional systems. Twieneboa aims to create an outstanding outpatient clinic that combines these unique forms of therapy to help her patients and team.
