William Paul Corbin has embarked on his most recent role as a client service account manager at STERIS, where his responsibilities include account relationship management, first-line assistance, project management for new and existing accounts, and providing guidance on process improvements and enhancements. Since the start of his career, Corbin has found success in doing what he enjoys with efficiency and a humble attitude.
A Humble Start and Finding Success
Corbin’s first step in his career was as an assistant manager at the fast-food restaurant Wendy’s, where he worked more than full-time while pursuing a master’s degree at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He looks back on this period and is glad that, at the time, it was just him and his wife, as his son would be born later in his career.
After receiving his degree, Corbin worked for Unisys Technical Services in Rochester, New York, as a help desk specialist working under contract. Through that job experience, he built his technical expertise. The feedback he received on his performance was excellent, as the company was impressed by his work ethic, technical skills, and ability to resolve issues quickly.
From there, Corbin transitioned to working for the New York State Department of Labor in Albany in a full-time position, though it was not a permanent position.
“I did their ticketing system setup for a lot of their organizational departments. I created all those accounts to track all the work they were doing at a state level,” Corbin said.
Corbin’s work performance exceeded their expectations, and once the job was completed, his employer moved him into a new position. Worried about the impermanence of contract work dependent on federal funds, he moved on to work for Yahoo. He enjoyed this position tremendously, though the hours were difficult to manage.
Throughout these positions, Corbin was praised for his work ethic, performance, and humble demeanor.
“I’m tenacious and very laser-focused when it comes to things. But the one thing I go back to is this whole concept my previous boss introduced me to, which is the servant-leadership style. For me, as long as the job is fulfilling and everybody else around me is better, that just makes my life easier,” Corbin said.
Prior to his current endeavors at STERIS, Corbin served as a support specialist in senior digital health solutions implementation at Getinge. In this capacity, he worked with Total Documentation, a software product line that allowed him to track the instruments in the medical department throughout the time they were used.
Imparting the Knowledge He’s Gained
Corbin is proud of what he has accomplished and shares freely the knowledge he has gained throughout his career. This included mentoring his wife so she could enter a leadership role in her own workplace. He considers himself a people person and is willing to share his life story to encourage others in their journey.
Practicing a positive mindset in his everyday life has been instrumental to Corbin’s overall success. It’s not always easy to maneuver through life’s difficulties, but he has sound advice for everyone.
“Patience — lots of patience and expanding yourself. The one thing I’ve learned over all these years is to constantly grow yourself. Find what interests you. Don’t just go based on market demands,” Corbin says.
One final bit of advice that Corbin imparts is that he believes it’s “not about the title one holds or the income one earns; rather, it’s about being able to live each day without regrets.”
