With over 40 years of professional experience in the telecommunications industry, Arturo Maria has been recognized as a distinguished expert in wireless technology and strategic planning for 5G and advanced wireless solutions.

Maria’s Professional Journey

Maria’s career began in 1977 when his role at Unisys marked the start of his ventures in supporting mainframe computers. After working in this field for 20 years, Maria shifted his professional career to cybersecurity with AT&T in 1997. At the time, cybersecurity was drastically different from what it has become today. Blending his background in mainframe operating systems and technologies proved pivotal in shaping his professional career in the wireless sector. Maria became part of the original AT&T Wireless team, which emerged from McCaw Cellular and focused on telecommunications fraud. This experience with AT&T allowed Maria to explore cybersecurity before transitioning into engineering.

Throughout Maria’s career, he has played an instrumental role in the advancements of wireless technology from 1G to 5G. At AT&T, he held various roles, including director and 5G global practice leader for integrated solutions and consulting from 2012 to 2024, where he managed teams and projects globally. He also briefly served as the director of the 5G Center of Excellence for Integrated Solutions & Consulting in 2024.

Today, Maria is the managing director of XG Advanced 5G Consulting Solutions. In this position, he utilizes his extensive expertise in wireless technology, 5G, and wireless security to support startups through strategic consulting. Maria’s role involves collaborating with venture capital firms, evaluating emerging technologies, and offering insights to investors and executives on promising innovations.

Outside of Technology

Beyond Maria’s professional career, he dedicated two decades to the U.S. Navy Reserve. While he retired as a full-rank commander in 2003, his military service included serving in significant operations like Desert Storm and the defense of South Korea. His contributions earned him numerous decorations, including the Defense Meritorious Service Medal and four Joint Service Achievement Medals.

In conjunction with Maria’s professional endeavors, he is actively involved in various organizations. He serves on the board of advisers for the School of Leadership Studies at Gonzaga University. Maria is also a CXO advisory board member for GTM Capital, engaging with industry leaders to drive innovation and foreign technology policy through his contributions to the National Bureau of Research.

The Foundation for Success

A foundational component of Maria’s success is his educational background. While having earned a Master of Business Administration in information systems from Eastern Washington University in 1977, Maria also received a Master of Education in curriculum, instruction, and learning from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2011, a Master of Science in organizational leadership from Colorado State University Global in 2018, and a Master of Legal Studies in intellectual property law from Arizona State University in 2022.

Maria attributes his success to the support of his family, especially his wife. He also recognizes the invaluable guidance from mentors he has worked with throughout his career. Looking to the future, Maria plans to grow his company further and collaborate with global organizations to harness wireless technology to positively impact society.
