Peter N. Mahmood is a military relations manager for the Military, Veteran & Military Spouse Recruitment Programs at Cox Enterprises, as well as a dedicated leader in connecting the military community with civilian career opportunities. His passion for bridging a sometimes-difficult gap stems from his personal understanding of the unique challenges faced by service members and their families when transitioning from military to civilian life.
A Journey of Service and Dedication
Mahmood’s career history reflects his deep and personal commitment to supporting the military community. He has extensive experience in the U.S. Army, including three combat deployments in Iraq, and he possesses important firsthand knowledge in his current role at Cox Enterprises. Before joining the company, he held several different leadership positions in the Army, including senior military analyst from 2011 to 2012, senior Army instructor for Piper High School from 2012 to 2014, and senior Army instructor for Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School from 2014 to 2018. Mahmood also served as senior recruiting manager from 2018 to 2020 and senior JROTC instructor from 2020 to 2022.
Mahmood’s civilian career has been equally impactful. He has shared his knowledge as a speaker on veteran recruiting at Global TA Day and the Association of Talent Acquisition Professionals. He was a volunteer youth soccer coach and a mentor to at-risk youths. Additionally, he founded and owned a firm dedicated to recruiting veterans and military spouses for various programs.
Turning Cox Enterprises Into a Military-Friendly Employer
At Cox Enterprises, Mahmood has contributed to the company’s reputation as a leading military-friendly employer. Under his guidance, Cox Enterprises was recognized as one of the Top 24 Employers for Military Spouses in 2024 and has received numerous awards as a leading employer for military veterans, a recognition that was extended into 2025.
Mahmood’s responsibilities include overseeing relationships between the military community and Cox, managing recruitment programs for military veterans and spouses, and enabling SkillBridge internship programs. He regularly travels to different military installations to offer important programs to service members.
Professional Persona and Online Presence
Mahmood believes the secret to his success is in developing a strong personal and online presence. He recognizes how important it is that individuals are “where the job seekers are,” whether in person at events or online on social media. He advises aspiring leaders in the field to “create that persona and presence that you are available, you are an expert in your field, you are online, you are presenting.”
The Future and Lasting Impact
In the future, Mahmood plans to expand his reach and impact his field even further. He aims to host a live podcast and create webinars centered on guiding the military and military spouse community toward civilian career success, envisioning a future for those transitioning from the federal and military workforce to learn and grow. Recently, he was associated with the Army Partnership for Your Success (PaYS) and was highlighted in the March issue of its newsletter.
Within the next five years, Mahmood wants to lead an educational corporate organization focused on talent recruitment, become a director in talent acquisition, and facilitate changes in hiring practices within the military community for veterans and their spouses.
A Personal Connection to Military Transition
Mahmood’s personal life has had a deep effect on his mission. His wife’s journey from military spouse to veteran spouse and, finally, to civilian spouse gives him an intimate understanding of the many challenges that military families experience. He believes it is crucial for those experiencing these changes and challenges to connect with someone who fully understands their journey.
Mahmood’s unwavering dedication, extensive personal experience within the military, and inventive approach make him a central figure in bridging the gap between military service and civilian careers. His commitment to aiding veterans and their spouses to help them thrive in the professional world continues to make a profound difference.
