Across his two decades of experience in banking, the excellence of Gatala’s work has earned him various recognitions and awards, such as inclusion in the Marquis Who’s Who listing of outstanding professionals in their fields. Today, Gatala continues to build on his extensive knowledge, exploring what lies in the future of banking.
Building the Skills for Career Success
Gatala began his education focusing on the sciences, acquiring a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Andhra University, a public university in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, in 2002.
After completing this degree, Gatala pivoted his studies into the financial world and acquired knowledge that would serve him throughout his career in the banking industry. In 2004, he earned a Master of Business Administration in finance and marketing from the National Institute of Technology in Tiruchirappalli, India.
During his graduate studies, Gatala entered the banking industry as an intern in the credit risk space. From the beginning, this work sparked his interest.
“I like to apply the concepts I learned in the classroom to the real world,” Gatala states. “From there, I was just enticed by the risk world.”
Distinguished Work Within the Banking Industry
Upon finishing his degree, Gatala became a credit risk manager at a private sector bank. In 2007, he transitioned into the senior business analyst position for Bankers Trust.
Over the following decade, Gatala would continue working in the banking industry, honing his expertise in roles such as senior business analyst for HSBC, senior solutions architect for Polaris Consulting and Services Ltd., and senior business data analyst for Northern Trust Corporation, among others.
In 2017, Gatala obtained the distinctive positions of associate director for LTIMindtree Limited and senior project development manager for Citibank. While he continues to serve in his role for LTIMindtree, he has since been promoted to associate director at Citibank, where he works on a high-visibility compliance project in the complaints and risk space.
One of Gatala’s most notable achievements in his field was implementing Citibank’s strict financial regulatory mandate in 2017. During this time, his leadership and guidance helped direct his team within a strict schedule without compromising the quality of their work. As a result, Citibank now has an enterprise-wide model risk system.
Promoting Knowledge and Sharing Expertise
In addition to his prolific career in banking, Gatala has contributed to knowledge in his field by publishing a textbook and writing several papers. He additionally shares his accumulated expertise by engaging in mentorship programs through platforms such as LinkedIn and Zoom. Across these mentoring sessions, Gatala finds fulfillment in assisting others with their projects, whether reviewing papers or book chapters. He also co-authored a book, “Essentials of Financial Markets and Services,” in 2024.
The Future Role of AI in Banking
Looking toward the future of his industry, Gatala is excited about AI’s transformative potential. In his commitment to continuous learning, he recently attended a workshop on utilizing AI in banking, where he gathered and shared industry trends with his peers.
For his personal future, Gatala is ambitious about developing a new risk framework within the next five to ten years. He strives to create a system incorporating AI to enable banks to make profitable decisions without compromising regulations or customer needs.
Gatala additionally aims to contribute to his community by promoting the spread of knowledge and reducing barriers to education and growth opportunities.

For others starting their careers or aiming for professional growth, Gatala has advice: “I think the most important thing is my ability to persevere through hard times,” he states. “Hold on to your dreams. If you don’t trust in your dream, nobody else will.”
