As one of the key donors, ViB played a pivotal role in making this life-changing mission a reality, ensuring that over 250,000 people now have access to clean water.
Kibera, located in Nairobi, Kenya, has long faced extreme water insecurity, with residents often forced to drink contaminated water that leads to deadly diseases. Through the collective effort of The Bucket Ministry and its generous supporters, including ViB, this challenge has been met with a sustainable solution—providing families with innovative water filtration systems that remove harmful bacteria and ensure safe drinking water.
This initiative was part of The Bucket Ministry’s historic five-year ‘Neighbors Serving Neighbors’ project, which successfully provided generational access to safe drinking water and spiritual support to every resident of Kibera. Through the dedicated efforts of 100 local Kenyan missionaries—98% of whom live in Kibera—over 81,777 Sawyer PointONE filters connected to buckets were distributed, ensuring access to clean water for all 408,478 residents. The missionaries also conducted follow-up visits, provided hygiene education, and shared a Gospel message that led to more than 21,000 professions of faith and 1,400 baptisms.

Both residents and local Elders in Kibera attest to the physical impact access to clean water has had in the slum, including less need for local health clinics due to decreased visits, children’s ability to attend school, and an overall increased level of happiness. A recent Hope College research study confirmed that The Bucket Ministry’s distributed filters reduced levels of E. coli and total coliform bacteria in drinking water by up to 99%, leading to a dramatic decrease in diarrheal disease from 52.7% to just 2.2%.
