A Multifaceted Career in Anthropology and Health

Dr. Rappaport’s career spans many segments. She began with a focus on academia and later transitioned into cultural anthropology. She became an expert in minority health and conducted significant research on suburban middle-class Cuban refugees. This work culminated in her book, “Capital Cubans: Refugee Adaptation in Washington, D.C.”

“Throughout my journey, I have learned the importance of adaptability and the value of diverse experiences,” Dr. Rappaport remarked.

From 1975 to 2005, Dr. Rappaport served as a contractual consultant in Washington, DC, specializing in minority health issues. Her early work included a public service science residency from the National Science Foundation at DC General Hospital, where she researched the low birthweight rate among disadvantaged Black women. This research led to her most cited article, “Social and Cultural Factors in the Etiology of Low Birthweight among Disadvantaged Blacks.”

Dr. Rappaport’s academic tenure includes 15 years of part-time teaching at prestigious institutions such as Georgetown University and George Washington University. However, her teaching career was curtailed when she entered government service, where her focus shifted entirely to her professional responsibilities.

Embracing New Frontiers: Artificial Intelligence and Space Science

In recent years, Dr. Rappaport has ventured into artificial intelligence (AI), exploring its implications for human evolution and decision-making. “As intelligent machines evolve, we must understand the energy demands and ethical considerations of AI,” she emphasized. “People must become better informed about AI and its potential dangers.”

Dr. Rappaport’s current projects at The Human Sentience Project LLC reflect this intersection of technology and humanity. Alongside co-founder Christopher Corbally, SJ, Dr. Rappaport is working on several publications, including “Ecotheology for Off-World Exploration: A Primer for Scholarly and Student Use,” which aims to address the complex relationship between emerging technologies and human values.

“To succeed in any field, you must be a risk-taker,” Dr. Rappaport advised. “Trust your instincts and values, even when faced with skepticism.”

As a recognized leader in her field, Dr. Rappaport continues to inspire others through her work and insights. She believes fostering connections among women in science is essential for future advancements. “I hope to encourage the next generation of women scientists to explore the intersections of science and spirituality in the context of space,” she added.

With a rich history of contributions to anthropology, health and now, AI, Dr. Rappaport remains committed to her research and advocacy, making certain that her work continues to resonate across disciplines and inspire future generations.
