Patrick J. Gendotti: Building a New Path in Software Development

Published on April 14, 2026

As technology continues to reshape how people learn, work and build careers, more professionals are stepping outside traditional paths and redefining how they enter the field. Software development, in particular, has become a space where persistence and self-directed learning can open new doors.

Patrick J. Gendotti’s career reflects that shift. With a background in engineering and a growing focus on software development, he has built a path defined by transition, discipline and a willingness to start over.

“I didn’t have a traditional start in software development,” Gendotti says. “I have a STEM background and engineering degrees, but as time went on, I didn’t fit with my original career path.” That realization led him to make a change. “I made a career change to software development, which is the focus of my new career transition.”

A Career Rebuilt From the Ground Up

Gendotti began his career in mechanical and aerospace engineering. He earned a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering in 2012 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering in 2013, both from the University of Southern California. He later worked as a CAD engineer with Critchfield Mechanical Inc. and as a facilities system drafter at Stanford Health Care.

Over time, Gendotti recognized that construction engineering was not the right long-term fit. Rather than remain on that path, he chose to pivot.

“I decided to start from scratch,” Gendotti says. That meant committing to new skills through online courses, boot camps and hands-on projects. By 2021, he secured his first role as a software developer at SandTech Solutions, where he worked as a full-stack developer building web applications. The transition remains one of his most meaningful accomplishments.

Learning Through Practice

For Gendotti, progress in software development comes from steady effort and practical application.

“Dedication to the basics, starting from scratch, learning step by step,” Gendotti says, has been essential. He also points to the field’s accessibility. “There are online sources, educators and books. It’s a very accessible body of information.”

Gendotti emphasizes learning by doing, building projects and applying concepts in real-world settings. That approach continues to guide his work as he pursues an online Master of Science in computer science at the Georgia Institute of Technology, with a focus on computing systems and large-scale design.

Expanding Into New Opportunities

In addition to his technical work, Gendotti is exploring a side project centered on creating and distributing course notes for students.

“I plan to do that this summer,” Gendotti says, noting that the project may grow over time depending on how it develops. The idea reflects his interest in making information more accessible to others.

Gendotti also highlights the importance of cybersecurity awareness in today’s environment.

“Cybersecurity awareness is critical,” Gendotti says. “Most successful attacks and breaches occur through social engineering.” He believes that education and awareness can help reduce these risks.

Looking Ahead: A Steady Path Forward

Gendotti aims to complete his graduate studies and move into a senior software developer role, with a long-term goal of becoming a software architect. His path reflects a broader shift in technology careers. Progress does not always follow a straight line. Instead, it often comes from recognizing when change is needed and committing to the work required to move forward.

By building his skills step by step and remaining open to new opportunities, Gendotti continues to shape a career defined by growth and adaptability.
