July 17, 2025, London — In recognition of AI Appreciation Day 2025, futurist and technology strategist Peter Swain released a statement reflecting on both the disruption and the redemptive power of artificial intelligence.
Swain, widely known for his pragmatic stance on AI, has often said, “If I could put AI back into the bottle, I would… I’m not convinced we’re ready for the power that it offers us.” But on this day of celebration, he’s focusing instead on the superpower AI unlocks for everyone: its ability to amplify human potential, especially where we’re weakest.
“For all the risks AI presents, one of its most profound and underappreciated gifts is this,” Swain said. “AI gives a voice to the people society too often overlooks. But more than that — it gives power to the parts of each of us that have been overlooked, underestimated, or underdeveloped.”
Swain points to countless examples of individuals — especially those from underrepresented backgrounds — using AI to overcome systemic barriers and reclaim agency: from creating content and launching businesses, to navigating the world with greater confidence and independence.
One standout is Ric Nelson, a speaker, author, and entrepreneur with cerebral palsy, who leveraged AI to publish his best-selling memoir Unstoppable: The Ric Nelson Story. Now at work on a second book, Nelson is exploring how AI is helping more individuals with disabilities rise into leadership roles once considered out of reach.
In another example, a woman who is legally blind traveled alone to meet Swain in person after using his programs. Before AI, she would blindly order the first thing on a food delivery app, ashamed to ask for help. Now, with AI reading the menu aloud, she not only orders confidently — she runs her business with the same tools everyone else uses.
“Yes, these are edge cases,” Swain said, “and if AI can unlock this level of power for people facing such visible challenges — imagine what it can do for the rest of us. We all have invisible struggles. We all have blind spots, doubts, and limits. AI, used well, doesn’t just level the playing field — it elevates the entire game.”
What Swain is really celebrating today, he says, isn’t the technology — it’s the transformation it enables.
“This isn’t about machines. It’s about people. The bold. The brilliant. The formerly invisible — and the quietly unsure. AI is their megaphone, their lens, their launchpad. And it can be yours too.”
Swain is urging business leaders, technologists, and policymakers to view AI not just as a tool, but as a platform for human potential, especially for those who’ve been underestimated, including themselves.
“If AI’s future is to be worth having,” he concludes, “it must be a future that elevates every voice — not just the loudest one. It’s not just about inclusion. It’s about unlocking everyone’s edge.”
