As technology continues to advance, the role of network engineers is transforming dramatically.
Rishit Lakhani, an experienced network engineer, believes that integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) into network engineering is not just the future but the present.
Lakhani’s career began in India, where he developed a passion for networks during his studies in Electronics and Telecommunications at the University of Mumbai. This passion led him to the United States for further education at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he earned a Master’s degree in Telecommunications Technology.
With a career spanning over a decade, Lakhani’s experience includes designing complex networks for diverse sectors, from healthcare and retail to enterprises and universities. “Each sector presents unique challenges,” he notes. “Healthcare requires strict regulatory compliance, while retail and enterprise environments demand high availability and scalability.”
A Journey Rooted in Curiosity and Innovation
Lakhani’s career took off with hands-on work in network validation and design. He honed his skills at VMware, where he led a sales engineering team specializing in Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) and cloud networking. His leadership and innovative approach earned him the President’s Club award, recognizing his exceptional contributions. “I’ve always been driven by the challenge of designing secure, resilient networks that meet evolving business needs,” Lakhani says.
His pivotal role at Nile, a company during its stealth phase, marked a significant turning point. At Nile, Lakhani was instrumental in developing network deployment processes and technical documentation. “Building a next-generation networking platform from scratch was an exciting challenge,” he reflects. “I helped shape our approach to supporting customers across various sectors.”
Presenting at Nile’s first Tech Field Day, Lakhani showcased the company’s innovative solutions. “It was an opportunity to highlight our work in designing future-proof networks. My ability to combine deep technical knowledge with clear communication truly sets me apart,” he adds.
AI and Machine Learning: The New Frontier
The integration of AI and ML is revolutionizing network engineering. These technologies offer unprecedented capabilities for real-time data analysis, pattern recognition, and predictive analytics. “AI-driven predictive analytics can detect early signs of hardware failure,” Lakhani explains. “Imagine ML models monitoring performance metrics of routers and switches. These systems can identify anomalies, such as slight increases in error rates or temperature changes, indicating potential failures. This early insight allows engineers to schedule maintenance or replace hardware before failures occur, reducing unexpected outages.”
AI also enhances network performance by automating resource allocation. “In environments like data centers, where traffic fluctuates, AI can analyze past patterns to predict future spikes. It then adjusts bandwidth or load balancing automatically, ensuring critical applications get the necessary resources without manual intervention,” he shares.
From a security perspective, AI is transforming network protection. “AI analyzes traffic flows to detect unusual behavior,” Lakhani notes. “It can identify and respond to potential threats in real-time, such as unexpected data transfers or unauthorized access attempts. AI can flag these anomalies, initiate responses, and enforce security policies to neutralize threats before they escalate.”
The Evolving Role of Network Engineers
As AI tools become more prevalent, network engineers’ roles are shifting. “Routine tasks like monitoring performance and configuring devices are increasingly automated,” Lakhani observes. “This allows engineers to focus on strategic tasks, such as designing resilient and adaptive networks.”
Lakhani envisions a future where network engineers become architects and decision-makers, using AI-driven insights to proactively manage networks. “Engineers will move from reactive problem-solving to proactive management, where AI tools help anticipate and resolve issues before they impact users,” he predicts.
Looking ahead, network engineers will play a crucial role in network security, collaborating closely with AI systems to fend off emerging threats. Engineers will need to develop new skills, particularly in programming and automation, to fully leverage these technologies.
Advice for Aspiring Network Engineers
When asked for advice for aspiring network engineers and immigrants aiming to succeed in the U.S., Lakhani emphasizes staying current with technological advancements. “Mastering advanced techniques in secure network design, like those I applied at Nile, can open doors to leading complex projects,” he advises. “Building a strong network of peers and mentors is also crucial. Attending industry events and seeking mentorship early in your career can provide essential support. Adaptability is key, especially as an immigrant. Embrace change, learn new skills, and stay curious and persistent. Strong soft skills in communication and leadership are equally important for success.”
